I would pass this dilapidated barn every day traveling Route 90 in Rockport, Maine. The setting had a somber and enticing feel I wanted to capture. A majority of this piece was completed en plein air and took it back to the studio to make adjustments. A study of the same barn can be found on my WATERCOLORS page.
This is one of three pieces I worked on after coming home from a winter visit to Florida. I used a myriad of online photos for reference. My wife and I were fortunate enough to visit west coast Sarasota area. The sunlight falling on and interacting with the estuaries was very uplifting.
This is one of my favorite pieces. I was out looking for scenes to paint around Hope and Rockport, Maine. I passed an old home with a rolling field, apple trees and an old man walking out with bucket and fruit picker. It was so bucolic, I had to paint it. I worked on sketches and finished the final piece in studio.
I went out for a drive to look for some inspiring scenes. As usual I was captivated by the barns I came across in that single trip. This was just outside of Eaton Rapids and seemed to be a part of a historic site. The play of light coming through the trees and bouncing on the ground, the tree and grass was brilliant.
This was painted many years ago when my wife and I resided in Rockport, Maine. There was a very bucolic road leading into the Camden village which passed by a Belted Galloway farm. This barn is where the cows would come to feed. One day I saw a wonderful light playing with the barn and tree and just had to paint it.
This is the second of three egrets paintings—on this page site—which I painted after my wife and I recharged our batteries with a winter trip to Sarasota, Florida.

I have spent time in Italy and France and love the culture, people and food. This was a still life I set up and painted remembering some of those moments.
My wife and I were driving and enjoying the fall scenery here in mid Michigan and stumbled on this orchard. When we toured the orchard I found this barn on the way out leading to the trees. It was very inviting to capture.
This was in early winter looking over Grand River and the sun falling behind clouds. It reminded me of Claude Monet's Waterloo Bridge paintings.
As is so often the case, when I paint a picture for a friend or family my work usually turns out better. This was painted for a family friend as a retirement gift.
I was walking in a local park where geese and fowl were everywhere. I saw this hen malard resting on the shoreline. I was able to get close enough to take some really good reference photos.
The inspiration for this was a long Michigan winter. I saw these daffodils emerging one spring day. The colors cut the drabness of the day and felt very uplifting. I took plenty of photo reference and worked on this in studio.
I was walking around the Tollgate Wetlands estuary, watching all the wonderful and diverse waterfowl—geese, ducks, cranes and these red wing blackbirds. It was entertaining to see the blackbirds interact with the thick reeds on the shoreline. I took lots of photo reference which was used alongside other online images.
I took a hike on Huckabee Trail in Sedona, Arizona. I found a scattered and hidden sub trail which I followed. I ended up climbing up the basin of some very beautiful red rock terrain to come up on this ridge as the sun was beginning to set. I took some rudimentary photo reference and developed the piece in studio.
Spring of 2023 I was enjoying the beauty of Michigan's fresh blooms. The tulips were everywhere in glowing fresh color. Even the white tulips seemed to hold a vibrant lushness. I set up a still life and took photo reference of the tulips sitting on our window sill with the garage and flower beds in the background.
